Hullabaloo returns for its 4th annual youth spoken word festival on April 24–26 at Vancouver’s Brittania Community Centre. This centre is at the heart of Vancouver’s spoken word community on Commercial Drive.
All teams that registered for Hullabaloo 2013 will be given a chance to pre-register for Hullabaloo 2014 from January 1–15. Public registration will then start on January 16th. The registration fee will be the same as last year, $160/team.
The format for the team tournament will be exactly the same as last year. Teams can be comprised of 3–6 students. There are two preliminary bouts, and a finals bout.
There are two changes to the rules for this year (also as a result of consultation with participants):
1. All student poets must be 18 years of age or younger at the time of the tournament (ie. for the upcoming festival they can’t turn 19 until after April 26, 2014).
2. No repeats at all – none! In past years, you could repeat group pieces on finals stage. No longer. This means the team will need to perform three different group pieces if they want to win the tournament. Solo pieces cannot be repeated either (within the team tournament), as usual. And it’s also worth mentioning, that pieces presented in previous Hullabaloo tournaments (solo or team) cannot be repeated in this year’s tournament. More new work! More new poems! This is all part of the shared vision that Hullabaloo prioritizes poet development.
